His love for the band even exceeds concern for his own health. On his deathbed in hospital he is seen listening at night to brass band music on headphones. His wrath is a source of fear amongst the band members. After their miserable performance at the Saddleworth contest he is furious and scolds them like naughty schoolchildren, reminding them that the band is a source of local pride.
